Putting Knitting in Context

Since 2025, I've published more than a hundred articles in Knit Local's magazine, exploring knitting through personal stories, research, history and culture.
For a month devoted to mental health, I published nine articles combining stories from the knitting community with science writing. One featured a combat medic who used knitting to manage his anxiety in Gaza. Focusing on the next stitch gave him something to concentrate on instead of waiting in fear. Another featured a woman who used knitting to occupy herself during long psychiatric hospitalisations. Those hours became her time with knitting, something that did her good. She is still working on a blanket she began during her first admission.

In another series, I published three articles about the colour white. I explored the work that goes into producing and maintaining white textiles, the way fibre and light affect the appearance of white yarn, and the role of white in ceremonies. In white knitted fabric, colour steps back and the eye begins to notice structure, texture and shadow. I accompanied the series with a community challenge in which knitters shared projects inspired by white.
